Committed to Scholarship, Leadership, and Excellence in the Nursing Profession
The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International was founded in 1922 by six students at the Indiana University Training School for Nurses. The name Sigma Theta Tau (the initials of the Greek words Storga, Tharos, Tima -- meaning Love, Courage, Honor) was chosen, and the society was chartered by the State of Indiana. The Honor Society became incorporated in 1985 as Sigma Theta Tau International, Inc. Constituent chapters are established in collegiate schools of nursing accredited by the national accrediting body recognized by the profession.
Dr. Anna B. Coles, Professor of Nursing, accepted the responsibility for organizing a local nursing honor society, with hopes of becoming a chapter of Sigma Theta Tau. In November 1973, the Executive Council of the School of Nursing unanimously agreed and gave their support to the establishment of an honor society. The Honor Society at Howard University became the seventy-second charter chapter, named Gamma Beta, of Sigma Theta Tau, June 2, 1975. Gamma Beta was the first Chapter to be charted at a Historically Black College or University.
The first induction ceremony was held April 24, 1976.
